When the time comes to cut the newsroom budget,
training and travel are often the first targets. Trips to
Poynter or API are postponed, fewer people are selected
for out-of-town workshops.

To help newspapers provide newsroom training
without expanding the budget, the Newsroom Leadership
Group is offering a series of COACHING KITS. Each
KIT costs $95 and contains all the materials necessary
for two 60- or 90-minute training sessions.

FOUR COACHING KITS ARE NOW AVAILABLE:
  • MOTIVATION: Three high-leverage factors will help people motivate themselves: Competence, Recognition and Involvement.
  • EVALUATION: Appraising someone’s performance must go beyond issuing an annual review and report card. To be useful, evaluations must identify the learning that will lead to higher performance.
  • DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS: Putting off those sensitive encounters with difficult people will only make matters worse. Editors can gain confidence by learning how to manage difficult conversations.
  • CONFLICT: Conflict is present in every newsroom. Editors need to know how to keep it constructive and intervene when it becomes corrosive.
