EDWARD D. MILLER
Edward is the managing director of The Newsroom Leadership Group, a coaching and consulting team. “Reflections on Leadership,” his weekly e-mail essay on newsroom management, is read by more than 10,000 editors around the world and his regional seminars have been attended by hundreds of front-line and senior editors. In recent years, he has become one of the industry's leading executive coaches.
He joined The Poynter Institute in 1989 as a leader in management and graphics programs. He is author of "The Charlotte Project: Helping Citizens Take Back Democracy," the story of the Institute's work with The Charlotte Observer in 1992 to reform election coverage. He was also editor of "Eyes on the News," Poynter's book on the impact of color on newspaper readership. Edward has been a frequent advisor to European news organizations and lecturer at their press associations, including IFRA (an international association for newspapers and media technology), the Institutt for Journalistikk in Norway, DJE (Den Journalistiske Efteruddannelse) in Denmark, and Pressinstitutet of Sweden. He has also conducted management workshops at the University of Helsinki.
A graduate of Williams College, Edward began his newspaper career on the International Edition of the New York Herald Tribune in Paris. From 1969 to 1981 he was editor of The Morning Call in Allentown, PA, where he helped de velop pioneering management and design techniques. He was named editor and publisher in 1979.
He is a former director and officer of the Associated Press Managing Editors Association (APME) and a former director of the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE). He was a cofounder of the Society of Newspaper Design and the First Amendment Coalition of Pennsylvania. He has served as a Pulitzer Prize juror.
CYNTHIA G. MILLER
Cynthia Gorley Miller is president of Next Level Teamwork, a consulting group that specializes in team development and training for small and mid-size businesses. She has more than 25 years experience in management and leadership, and a master’s degree in business administration.
A former metro editor at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Cynthia has also worked as a management consultant for small businesses and as a managing partner with Newsroom Leadership Group, a coaching and consulting team serving newspaper editors around the world.
Cynthia is an advisory board member for the McCormick Foudation and J-Lab’s New Media Women Entrepreneurs, an initiative that provides funding to journalism projects led by women. She has also written a book on the history of Clark Atlanta University, a historically black university in Atlanta.
Cynthia received her master’s in business administration from Kennesaw (GA) State University and her undergraduate journalism degree from the University of Georgia. She lives in Marietta, GA, with her husband, Edward, and her two children, Erin and Joe.
